Our Biblical Languages modules introduce the student to Biblical Hebrew and Greek. The modules begin with basic grammar and move on to reading skills and the use of the languages in exegesis.

 

Greek 1(GK 1)

(30 points)

This module will equip the student with the following skills:

  • Discuss the origin and importance of Koine Greek.

  • Know and use the morphology and syntax of Koine Greek—including articles, nouns, adjectives, cases, verbs, tenses, moods—starting with simple forms and sentence constructions, and moving on to more advanced morphology and syntactical structures.

  • Build a working Koine Greek vocabulary of about 600 words.

  • Read some easier passages from the Greek New Testament.

  • Discuss the value and limitations of knowing Greek at this level.

 

Greek 2 (GK 2)

(30 points)

This module will equip the student with the following skills:

  • Know and use all the morphology and syntax of the Greek New Testament.

  • Effectively use some standard Greek reference works, such as grammars and lexicons.

  • Expand one’s working vocabulary of Koine Greek.

  • Read a variety of passages from the Greek New Testament.

  • Read some Greek texts outside the New Testament.

  • Discuss some basic principles of translation. Apply these principles to the translation of Greek texts and use them to evaluate some English translations of the Bible.

  • Explain and apply some basic principles of New Testament textual criticism.

  • Discuss the value and limitations of knowing Greek at this level.

 

Hebrew 1 (HE 1)

(30 points)

This module will equip the student with the following skills:

  • Discuss the nature and history of biblical Hebrew.

  • Know and use the morphology and syntax of biblical Hebrew, starting with simple forms and constructions and moving on to more advanced ones.

  • Build a basic working Hebrew vocabulary.

  • Read some easier passages from the Hebrew Old Testament.

  • Discuss the value and limitations of knowing Hebrew at this level.

 

Hebrew 2 (HE 2)

(30 points)

This module will equip the student with the following skills:

  • Know and use all the morphology and syntax of the Hebrew Old Testament.

  • Effectively use some standard Hebrew reference works, such as grammars and lexicons.

  • Expand one’s working vocabulary of biblical Hebrew.

  • Read a variety of passages from the Hebrew Old Testament.

  • Discuss some basic principles of translation. Apply these principles to the translation of Hebrew texts and use them to evaluate some English translations of the Old Testament.

  • Explain and apply some basic principles of Old Testament textual criticism.

  • Discuss the value and limitations of knowing Hebrew at this level.
